In the faint sunlight, a group of 5 people was seen, treading through the thick, dense forest. The trees let in very little light so inside, the people had to rely on their eyes for their guidance. Songbirds were heard and the air held a heavy, forest scent.
In the front of the line, there was a tall, strong looking man. He had short spiky hair that was black, and his skin was a light brown. The man looked about 25, from the height of his body and the body frame. The man’s eyes were a light blue and he wore a dark brown, leather jacket. Underneath the jacket, he had a black t-shirt and his pants were dark blue jeans. All of his pieces of clothing were torn and bloody.
Next in line was a young girl, with pale skin. She had long, black hair that fell down to her waist. She had a black, velvet dress that went halfway past her thighs, and a matching fingerless glove set. The gloves reached up to her elbows. Something was unusual about this girl. Her eyes were a demonic red and flicking behind her, was a long, black fox tail that was bushy. Like the man in front of her, her articles of clothing were worn-out and torn.
Third was a male. He had a dark robe and dark brown hair. He had a serious face and his eyes were a dark red. The man had his hands in his pockets and his skin was a light brown. He had dark shoes that looked worn like his other pieces of clothing. The man seemed to have this annoyed look on his face and the way he walked seemed to support that fact that he was annoyed. The man looked about 16, or 17.
Behind him was another girl. She had short black hair and white ears on her head that were pointy and small. She had pale skin, like the first girl, but her eyes were a dark, jade green. She looked young and seemed to be off in a daydream. There was a thing, white cat tail that swayed behind her in a rhythm-like beat. She wore a purple striped tank top with white short-shorts. Both of these pieces of clothing were a bit torn.
Last was a tall man that had a strong looking figure. He wore no shirt, but he had black pants. His eyes were closed, but he moved with confidence. He had two small, white fox ears with black tips and two fox tails, also with black tips. He had short black hair and wore no shoes, but his feet weren’t human. It was more like a dog’s claws rather than toes.
The five of them did their best to get through the forest, staying together. The feeling of anticipation was in the air, making the people wary and alert. They didn’t speak, but their posture would say everything. The morning sun would be peeking through the tree branches and that was their only warmth from the frosty air.
”Aruk, you sure this is the right place?” The man third in line spoke out, looking at the first person in line who seemed to be Aruk. His voice seemed deep as he spoke, a hint of annoyance, too.
”Yea, I’m pretty sure. This place has the feel of home.” Aruk replied, his voice seemed deep and husky.
A few months ago, when the world was actually living, the supposedly good Novella Corps sent out a virus that was thought to cure every disease known to man. Most of the world got this shot and after a month, turned into flesh-eating zombies. The other half got eaten, or bit by the infected zombies and died, or turned into the mindless zombies themselves. Aruk and his group thought they were the last people alive, but they took no chances.
Aruk found the others in one of the Novella Corps hideout, where they have been tested and treated cruelly. When Aruk had found them, he had seen that they were turned into something far from their natural selves. He had saved them from their cruel fate and they all soon became close friends. Aruk and the others are now on a quest to destroy the Novella Corps who had turned the world upside down.
”Edwic,” Aruk said, coughing slightly. “You’re in charge of Cougar, okay?”
Edwic nodded, turning his attention to the girl with the white ears and tail. He walked over to her and put his hand on her head.
Aruk turned to the man that was last in line, Aruk’s brown eyes gazing restlessly. “Renskay, you’re in charge of Wolfeh.”
Renskay, the man with the fox ears and tail, walked over to the girl with the bushy tail and patted her head, showing that he understood. The girl smiled a bit and giggled slightly. Then, after that was said, they went back to walking, following Aruk as they stepped over large tree trunks of fallen trees and the soft, dry grass.
After a few moments, Aruk pulled back a branch of a tree. Behind it was a dark, creepy city. Most of the buildings that were visible looked like total destruction. They were blown up and had red streaks on them that looked like blood. There was a dark and brown mist that hung over the city’s farther parts. Even with the lush, green forest surrounding the city, it just looked like a death hole and devastation.
Aruk knew that this used to be his home in his childhood days. That was all he could remember, but he had been kidnapped when he was 12, and then the rest of his memory was blacked out. Up until a few months ago, he woke up in an alley. He saw a van with an ad for the Novella Corps good injection. For some reason, he didn’t trust the as and refused to take the shot.
Later that month, after he survived the zombies with rifles and pistols, he saw an Novella Corps building. Then he found out about Wolfeh, Cougar, Edwic, and Ren who lived in horrible conditions. Freeing them, they stuck together and the former Novella Corps prisoners told Aruk about the Novella Corp’s horrible plans.
”My God...” Whispered Aruk to himself, unable to grasp the fact that his only cherish memory was now lying in ruins. “What the hell happened...?”
Wolfeh let out a small whimper, being frightened by Aruk’s bad language. She hated when people cursed from past experience with the Novella Corps.
A few months ago, when Wolfeh woke up, she was in a cage with absolutely no memory of what happened to her. In the same cage as her, she met Cougar who protected her and watched over her. Cougar treated Wolfeh as a sister and that is what they had become. Later on, Ren came in and he took care of the two girls.
After a while, the three got turned into test subjects from the Novella Corps. The three of them had faced great pain, having their DNA played with. This went on for months.
Then came the time when their change was complete. Ren, Cougar and Wolfeh moved into a different cell, where they met Edwic. Bonding very well, the four of them had been together for a long time. They knew that they all shared the same story. They all didn’t know who they were, and have no memory of their past lives before they had came to the Novella Corps’ prisoners.
”Oh wow...” Said Cougar, pretending to be amazed from the sight of the broken down city. “I guess that’s new...”
”Well, that’s interesting.” Ren spoke up, only having that to say. Ren started down the trail that they were walking on, towards the old cement road that was about 2 miles away.
The rest of them followed, the sun shinning brightly overhead.
Edwic kept a watch out for zombies, his red eyes darting around from side to side. Ren had his eyes closed, looking around and stepping confidently. Aruk had his shotgun ready in his arms with Wolfeh following closely behind. Cougar was walking behind Aruk and Wolfeh, looking ahead at the dark and lonely city.
Soon they came to the outskirts of town. The houses were hollow and smeared with blood. The heavy, brown mist hurt their eyes as they walked, the brown air blocking out the sun. Aruk had his gun ready to fire when he saw a shadow. The shadows mostly turned out to be a building or tree. The group had talked rarely, keeping their breath held in from the threat of zombies appearing. The city seemed to hold an eerie feeling, a sad history, and a terrible future. On the ground laid bodies of the killings, a horrible stench wafted into the survivors’ noses.
”Oh my God...” repeated Aruk, seeing a wave of zombies walking deranged towards them while moaning in hunger. They had come to a place with two caged-like fences, like a basketball court. There were short and fat buildings around them, which were smeared with blood. They had come to a place where there were two fenced yards that looked like basketball courts, and tall, rusted buildings that were short and long. There was an old highway that looked as if it would crumble to the ground at any moment.
”Oh lawdy.” Ren said aloud, watching the mindless mutants stagger, their skin a sick green and their eyes a dull yellow. They had bit of torn clothing and tattered skin. Their mouths were open, showing rotted, yellow teeth.
Aruk got his gun ready, starting to shoot at the threat. “Get back! Ren, Edwic take Cougar and Wolfeh someplace safe!” Aruk shot some more zombies, disappearing in the mist as Ren, Edwic, Cougar, and Wolfeh ran to safety.
Ren and the others ran into a warehouse and covered the windows and doors with boards of wood, chairs and other furniture.
”What now?” Asked Wolfeh, her voice quivering a bit after they had finished their job of blocking the possible places to get in. “What about Aruky...?”
Ren sat beside Wolfeh and patted her head. “Now we wait.”
Edwic looked around the room. The room was dark; only a tiny bit of sun peeked through the small cracks of the walls. The floor was mad of concrete. Edwic had given his trench coat to Cougar to use from the cold, hard ground. He was leaning against a wall, hand in his pockets. Edwic gazed to Ren and Wolfeh who were sitting together, talking. He turned his attention to Cougar who was looking at her shoes. Edwic went over to Cougar and sat beside the girl.
”Hey Coug,” he said softly, “What’s up?”
Cougar blinked. “Eh, I’m good. Just daydreaming a bit.” She looked at her shoes that were out in front of her.
Edwic nodded. “I see...” He glanced over at Ren and Wolfeh. Wolfeh was asleep on Ren’s lap and Ren was petting Wolfeh’s head.
The room was getting darker by the moment and the four of them all had one question on their mind. Where was Aruk?

Chapter 2
Aruk was winning. Most of the zombies were lying on the ground, lifeless. He had switched guns and was shooting two pistols. Aruk had not much gun powder left and thought he might need to retreat when a shadow had tackled the zombie in front of him in a matter of seconds. Then, the same thing happened again. Two people were helping Aruk. A few moments later, an automatic gun shot was heard and seen killing ten more zombies. He was no loner surrounded by zombies. Three figures moved in the brown mist. They took on a human like shape, but not the feel of one. There were two girls and one boy.
The first girl stood on the far left. She had pale skin and deep blue eyes. Her tail was black and she had a grey and black checkered sweater, with the hood up. She seemed like a normal girl, but something was strange about her that Aruk couldn’t say. She wore grey shorts and grey sneakers that looked worn along with the rest of her clothing.
The girl beside her was way different. She had big round horns and a demon spiked tail that twisted and flicked. She had short black hair and red eyes. She wore a black tube top and grey skinny jeans. On her feet, she wore no shoes. The girl was tall and thin and she seemed to be smiling at Aruk, but Aruk wasn’t so sure.
The man stood on the right of the horned girl. His skin was dark and his hair was black, with short spiky points. His eyes were a dark blue, and seemed to have an annoyed gleam in him. He wore a black, leather shirt with a white trim and design. Under the jacket, he wore a torn and bloody black t-shirt. His jeans were a dark grey and covered a bit of his white sneakers. In his arms was a black gun that seemed hard to identify.
”Hey there.” Aruk said, nodding to the three people. “Thanks for saving me.”
”No problem, sir.” The girl with the grey sweater spoke out, jumping up and down a bit with excitement. “I’m Beckii!”
The man nodded, and then turned his attention to Aruk. “Call me Hesi, please. The girl beside me is Dino.”
Dino waved, nodding to Aruk.
”Cool” Aruk said, nodding and thinking of their names, “I’m Aruk, I have a few other friends but I told them to run when the zombies attacked.”
Hesi’s eyes widened a bit “You mean there’s more of you people?” He turned to Dino, and then nodded at her.
Dino looked at Aruk. “We’d better find them, Aruk. They might be in a Red Zone and that defiantly won’t be good.”
”Red Zone?” Aruk asked confusion in his voice. The three other people were already walking off in a different direction.
”Yea, the Red Zone. It’s a zone where the bad people are. Zombies and the Novella Corps.” Beckii spoke, no worry in her voice as she tagged along behind Dino. “The bad guys.”
Dino nodded, still looking into buildings and other places that might be a hiding spot. “The Red Zones are all over the area, they could be in danger.”
Hesi turned around to face Aruk. “What’s your motive?”
Aruk stopped, looking at Hesi. “My motive? Well, our small groups of five are aiming to destroy the Novella Corps and their plans. We all are looking for new survivors to help us with this mission. Then, we’ll help save the world with this horrible plot with the Novella Corps.”
Hesi grinned, looking down. He chuckled then looks straight into Aruk’s eyes. “A bit of a large dream for such a small group, eh? Might as well forget it now and live to the fullest while you still have a chance.”
By then, Beckii and Dino were standing beside the two men, watching and listening into their conversation.
Aruk thought for a moment before speaking from his heart with determination. “Winners don’t give, they win.”
Hesi stopped chuckling then looked firmly at Aruk. “Then let’s win.”
Renskay woke up to a loud crash. His heart leaped with surprise, but he stayed still. Could the Novella Corps had found them? His eyes darted around the room, starting to adjust to the dark light. Wolfeh was curled up beside him, unaware of the sound. Another large bang echoed through the room.
”Ren” Edwic’s voice was just a whisper. “You hear that?”
”Yea, I do. Fight to the death?” Ren asked with determination.
”Yea, fight to the death.” Edwic spoke right after Ren stopped.
Footsteps were heard and they got closer. There was about 3 or 4 of them and they were quick and steady. Then a beam of light shone into Ren’s face, Ren covering his eyes from the sudden light. A familiar voice was heard and Ren heard Edwic let out a sigh of relief.
”Ren!” It was Aruk. “Edwic! Wolfeh and Cougar!”
Edwic got up and glared silently at Aruk. “Don’t EVER do that again!”
Ren turned and saw that Aruk had brought in three new people. A strange girl with horns, a man that seemed to have a strange feel to him and a young, restless girl that looked normal, but Ren didn’t think that a normal girl was possible in this kind of world.
Edwic was still shouting angrily at Aruk. “I thought you were one of those damned Novella Corps!”
Aruk stopped. “The Novella Corps?”
Renskay got up and nodded. “Yea, we found one of their buildings here. It may be one of the HQ. Pretty big, about 30 stories.”
Cougar and Wolfeh was awake by then, sitting up and listening.
”The Novella Corps are here?” Cougar’s voice broke into their conversation. Where?”
Edwic turned to Cougar. “Yea, when we were looking for a hide-out, me and Renskay saw the building.”
Wolfeh let out a small yawn, looking up at Aruk. “Aruky, I’m tired.”
Aruk turned his attention to Wolfeh. “Okay, let’s get to bed guys. We’ll talk about this further in the morning. Dino-“
Aruk turned around and seen that the three people were gone. Dino, Beckii and Hesi had left them.

Cougar had awakened from a soft scraping sound on the door. She sat up and looked around. For a second, she had gotten scared by the unfamiliar place, but quickly realized that she was in the broken down building of their hideout. She had her eyes set on the door, a shadow seeming to loom ever it.
Cougar got up and quietly crept over to the door. The shadow seemed to move away as she came, and disappeared as she opened the door. Cougar opened the door quiet, going out of the building and silently shut the door behind her.
Outside was a breath-taking sight. The mist had lifted from the city and about 10 miles away, was large mountains that had bordered the West side of the city. There was a mist that had formed close to the mountains, making them look like they were covered in snow. The morning sun was just appearing over the mountains, casting long shadows behind the buildings. She looked around the street just in time so see a person run behind a building onto another street.
In a moment, she was already turning the corner the person had passed. She had seen him look back, and caught a good glimpse of him. Short blonde and black hair with piercings on his face. He had a black muscle shirt on, along with dark green cargo pants. He looked about 16 or 17.
She had followed him for a long time, and by now, the sun was already past the mountains and the mist was starting to form. She had turned the corner to see him waiting, a smirk on his face. She stopped and looked at him in confusion, then around the area. He had lead her to a railway track, that seemed to be surrounded by tall buildings, molded with dust and dirt. She looked back to the man wh had pulled out a gun, starting to aim it at her. Cougar had been frozen with fear, herself staring with terror.
”Chris! Drop the damn gun!”
Cougar seemed to be lifted from the spell as the man lowered the gun, his eyes narrowing with hatred. Two women had came into the area, their hair a dark red, along with their eyes. The one in front seemed slightly taller than the other girl and she was dressed differently. She wore a white, black, and red corset, along with black skinny jeans. The girl had pale skin, like she was part vampire. Cougar seen when she spoke again that she had pearly white fangs. She was looking at the other girl who wore a red and black dress that was bunched up in the front, showing her long pale legs, along with the back of it let loose and flowing as she walked.
Cougar didn’t notice that the girl in front was speaking to her, until she looked away from the other girl at her.
”Oh dear, you poor thing. I’m terribly sorry about that. Chris is still learning to be like us” The girl in the corset smiled warmly at Cougar. “I’m Tara, may I ask you name?”
Cougar’s attention turned to the man who was called Chris. She studied him, looking over his figure carefully. He was tall and strong looking. His arms seemed to be hard with pure muscle. With the tattoo on him along with all the piercing, he looked really tough. The tattoo. She squinted. It was of an N. That only meant one thing. Chris was a Novella Corps worker.
Cougar took a step back, her breath coming out hard and fast. Tara looked at her confused, with the other girl also looking at her funny.
”I… I have to go.” Cougar’s words came out in stammers, herself looking for the quickest way to get out of that spot.
”Why so soon?” Tara tilted her head, her eyes seemed to be curious. Chris stood there like a rock, the same look of hatred on his face as he stared, hard and cold at Cougar.
”I think I hear them calling my name.” Cougar’s heart hammered with fear. She almost felt the ground shake from her heart. Thump, thump, thump. Cougar turned on her heel and ran, her feet coming down hard as she darted out of the railway place. Thump, thump, thump Her heart seemed to be beating out of her chest as she ran. Why was it so loud? The ground seemed to be shaking more and more. Cougar stopped, trying to grasp what was happening. The thumping got louder and the ground was shaking more. Cougar let out a scream as she seen buildings topple over and behind it, stood a large giant of a zombie. It roared with anger as he stepped towards her, the ground shaking once more and making Cougar fall down.
Cougar was frozen with fear, herself staring up at the mutant zombie. She hadn’t seen it coming, but was suddenly bouncing up and down in the air. She let out a small scream, seeing a figure hold her by the waist and jump up on a rooftop. He had dark skin and a black jacket with a design on the trim. His eyes were a dark blue and his skin was dark. He had short spiky hair and stopped on a rooftop farthest from the giant zombie. He was known as Hesi
The man watched as two other girls from his party jumped in front of the zombie, in circles. The zombie tried to swipe at them, then let out a roar of anger. It had been going in circles and had got dizzy from the continuous motion.
The three other people from before came into the scene from behind Cougar and Hesi. They had a club with a mace at the end and silently hit the man on the head. One of them had been Chris. Chris hit Hesi with the mace and he lost his grip on Cougar and falling to the ground. Chris picked her up and threw her on his shoulder, Cougar screaming for desperate help. She felt that no one was thee so save her. She would be kidnapped, and never get to see her best friends ever again. She would have been taken by Cable and those two girls, never seeing her friends again. Ever.
Dino looked over at Hesi for a quickly glimpse and then froze. Hesi was unconscious and a young girl was getting taken away from Hesi by a tall man and two other girls with dark red hair. Her thoughts raced with different ideas. The girl seemed to be screaming for help and she nodded to Beckii who was also watching, gesturing for her to take care of the zombie by herself.
In a quick moment, Dino was holding onto Cougar and trying to comfort her as she jumped from building to building. She looked behind her to see the tall, dark-haired man following her. She quickly jumped down just in time to bump into Aruk who had just came into the scene
Dino felt a wave of relief and quickly told him about the man. Aruk fired a shot behind her, Cougar squirming out of his grip and behind Aruk. The man quickly jumped up onto the roof and disappeared, his eyes surging with anger and hatred. Aruk started to shoot at the giant zombie, before taking a good look at the scene.
Buildings were toppled over and the ancient road was cracked and broken. In an instant, Aruk started to shoot at the zombies weak spokes, Head, chest, legs. Nothing seemed to work the zombie was too big. Aruk switched guns and started to shoot an automatic machine gun. Firing at the zombie’s neck, the head fell off the body and the body toppled over, crashing into a building. Dust flew up everywhere and the intersection looked like a big bloodshed.
They were safe. Dino was quietly watching the blood drip off of the buildings, along with the red dark spots that were soaking into the ground. Beckii had come to Aruk, Hesi on her back and she nodded to Dino.
”He’s still alive. Just a small bonk on the head.” Beckii smiled and giggled with innocence. Aruk patted Cougar’s head, quietly guiding her to turn around and himself starting to walk away.
The sun was still rising, just coming over the tall buildings that were standing over the bloodshed of the now finished battle.
As Aruk walked, he had a lot of things on his mind. The man with the N on his arm. Who was he? And the two red-haired girls that seemed to be with him. Who were they? Aruk knew that the Novella workers almost always worked alone on the expeditions and hunts. The two girls with him also didn’t seem to be the Novella Corps workers, or they would have been fighting along side with the man. Aruk shrugged the thoughts off of his mind. He had more important things to think about. Like how they were going to survive the week with very little supplies.
They all were walking back to their own homes. The two groups then parted at the districts that separated their homes. The sun was just going behind a cloud, just seeming to mark more troubles for them later on.

Later on that day, Aruk had made a group meeting. They were all sitting around in the warehouse they had found the day before. Aruk’s eyes were serious, watching the group until they were all settled, then spoke. “I guess you already know about the zombies, from that thing back there. And I’m pretty sure that your all hungry, too.’ He looked to Edwic, who was leaning against a wall, arms folded across his chest, seeing his boredom. “We’ll go sent out a search food party right now. Any volunteers?” Renskay spoke up, watching Aruk. “Me and Wolfeh will go for the food. We can keep each other safe, since I have to watch over her.” Aruk nodded towards Ren. “OK, Edwic, Cougar, and I will go out to find some supplies for our warehouse. Maybe a car with some gas in it.” Edwic let out a sigh. “I don’t want to. We should go and find those people again. We might need them.” Aruk looked at Edwic, thinking for a moment. “Will you be okay, looking for them?” He nodded. “Of course I will.” Aruk’s eyes seemed to grow hard as he stared. “Don’t pull anything stupid, or I’ll kill you.”
It was noon when Renskay and Wolfeh had found a supermarket after a long hard walk of fear and nervousness. They hadn’t seen any zombies yet, but they had kept their guard up, watching carefully for any movement in the dark mist. When they seen the supermarket, they both felt happy, and excited to find some food. Once inside, they felt slightly disappointed, from the gross dirt and grunge on the floors, shelves, and walls. It was just as gross as outside, blood on the walls, along with the gross smell of the corpses. It was dark, but not too dark that they couldn’t see. Some lights were flickering as they quietly crept through the aisles. “Hey, I found it.” Wolfeh’s voice came from the aisle next over. Ren quickly ran over to her and started to fill the basket he had with the cans of food. “Hopefully this stuff is still good.” Ren said, looking at one of the cans in his hand. “If it isn’t then we’d have to come back here.” Wolfeh quietly thought of Aruk. She felt her face grow slightly more hot, and stopped with her work. Renskay looked over at her. “You okay, Wolfeh?” His voice held concern, quietly staring at him, his head tilted. “Uh, I was just thinking of Aruk...” Wolfeh turned away, not wanting to show her blushing face. Ren nodded. “And?” Wolfeh quietly decided that she’ll tell him the truth of her feelings for Aruk. “I… like him.” Ren didn’t seem effected of this, and went on with his work. Wolfeh continued. “He’s just so… strong and nice…” She seemed to smile softly, thinking of him. “Like how he saved us from the Novella Corps.” Ren agreed. “He is quite amazing, eh?” Wolfeh nodded. “I was wondering… If you can talk to Aruk for me. He just seems to busy with this big quest. He doesn’t seem to have time for me.” Renskay looked at her, and smiled. “Yea, I can do that.” Wolfeh looked back, then blushed. “Really…?” “Yea, he’s a good friend of mine, like you are to him. I’m sure I can get him alone and talk to him.” Wolfeh nodded silently. She felt happier, but slightly embarrassed. She went back to putting the cans closest to her in her basket, going about on her work. Her ear twitched slightly, hearing a crunch from someplace close by. Ren had heard it too, and looked up. He quietly looked towards her, then motioned her to go to the back of the aisle. She did his silent command, Renskay following quickly. There was a moan of a zombie, then sounds of the zombies dragging their footsteps. Ren didn’t know how many there were, but knew he had to survive and protect. He lead her, quietly, towards the kitchen utensils, knowing that they could use some knifes and such there. As they neared their destination, the moaning and dragging footsteps got louder and more plentiful. He noticed that the aisle was a dead-end, so he put Wolfeh behind him, getting one of the knives and opening the package. He knew that there would be no way out. He kept his eyes on the start of the aisle, waiting. The shadows loomed over the broken tiles of the ground, then got his knife ready in a throwing position. Slice. It went right through the zombies’ head just as he appeared. Renskay smirked at his accuracy. He opened up another package of one of the knives and threw it again, hitting another zombie. There was a thud of the fallen zombie, then blood quietly drew out of its head and making a puddle of crimson red liquid. Renskay grinned at the feeling of victory. He then noticed that there were more zombies than knives and weapons. He frowned slightly. “Damn it. Wolfeh, try and climb up onto the shelf and stay there.” Ren shouted at his companion, who obediently followed his command, climbing up on the highest self. Renskay tried to keep them away, but they seemed to get closer. He felt the surge of victory slowly disperse into thin air. They got closer. He tried to keep them away, killing them with the knives. They got too close, and Ren was backing up more and more. The moaning of them got louder with the need for human blood and flesh. Ren knew he was going to die. He was going to die, or turn into a mindless zombie and maybe kill Wolfeh. He didn’t want that to happen. He didn’t want to die. He didn’t want to give up the quest for freedom. Like a miracle, the time in the super market seemed to slow down. No.. Ren thought to himself, The zombies are slowing down, it seems. Renskay could still move around at his normal speed, and Renskay noted that Wolfeh seemed to slow down also. Ren felt confused. He had no idea what was happening.
“What the hell?” His voice was slightly annoyed. He was surprised when one replied.
“Hello.” It was like a child’s voice, seeming to come from above him.
Renskay looked up and did a small gasp. There was a light blue diamond floating, about one meter up above him. And it talked! Renskay let out a small grunt, then pocketed his hand, knowing that time has stopped, judging by Wolfeh not moving.
The diamond spoke with a slight giggling tone. ‘Do you want to live and fight, Renskay?” Renskay thought for a moment. “Yes, I do.” “I’ll ask again, Ren. Do you want to live and fight?” Ren felt confused, but replied with confusion.” Yes…” “Say it like you mean it, Ren.” The diamond seemed to be speaking to him, floating above him. “Yes, I want to live to fight.” “I can’t hear you.” “Yes. I want to live and fight!” Ren shouted with more enthusiasm. “OK, I will grant you the wish.” The diamond replied with a hint of amusement. The diamond broke open, and light, sky blue sparkles fluttered down towards Renskay. Ren felt a new surge of power and then time went back to its normal rate, and Renskay felt like he was on the top of the world, with the new feeling of power, surging within him.

CITY OF SOULS By Janelle Lac Seul
Forward
Darkness was a big part of their life. Fear and pain also had a toll on the battered figures that stood in the cells, aged and hopeless. The Novella Corps Test Building was where they had met their fate. Hundreds of innocent people were dragged, struggling, to the place where all of them had feared. The White Room. Pain and suffering was in this small room of Hell. In the White Room, the innocents had been turned into something horrid. The tests that the Novella Corps had put on them had been cruel and nasty. The big needles they had shoved in their arm to make them sleep just only lightly, then made to suffer through the long, painful hours of the transformation had taken away all their hope. Their only hope of freedom. Most of them had thought that the Novella Corps had taken everyone from the world.
The Novella Corps had first started taking orphans from the Black Market in some foreign country, first the tiny babies, then the children. They had gotten their trust with them, then gathered more people, kidnapping and buying them. No one had known about the Novella Corps at this time. They had only started on their path to power. Then, they had started on a virus that was made in the form of a syringe. They had then made their knowing open to the world, saying that the syringe they were working on was said to cure every disease known to man. They had said that the vaccine will be open to everyone in just a few weeks. They hadn’t said that the vaccine had been made to kill.
Sirens. Flashing lights. Foot steps and shouting.
These things had awakened one man in a cell of four. The man was tall and slim, with dark brown hair that was short and slightly spiked. He also had red eyes that were like the color of crimson blood. He got up and walked towards the bar cells, peering out as the group of men who had just passed the cell, shouting at each other with their guns, held firmly in their arms.
Looks like someone got out. He thought to himself, looking the way that the men had came. He seen the big cell doors that were made of steel, with only one window, with a mesh.. He knew that just outside of the door, there would be a long hallway with steel walls and other sliding doors that moved just as you went close to them.
There were two young girls in the cell, who sat on the bench, one rubbing her eyes. She had a long bushy tail that was black and seemed soft. As she rubbed her eyes, she let out a small yawn, looking over at the man. The other girl stretched herself awake yawning also.. One of them looked up at the man; her red eyes seemed scared, herself having a long, thick, bushy tail. She had then turned to the other man in the cell, the man lying on the stone bench, hands behind his head and his eyes closed. The other girl had a long white tail that was flicking from side to side, her having deep blue eyes. She looked at the man near the bars, and then something was seen.
Two men appeared before their cell. They both wore brown jackets, and grey jeans. These pieces of clothing were all bloodied and ripped. The man on the right had a key. His eyes seemed soft and kind as he jiggled the key into the lock. The other man held a rifle, his eyes seeming to be cold and hard as he stared. The whole thing was silent, the two men working to free them. In just a few moments, there was a faint click, and they were on their way out to freedom. As they turned the corner, three Novella Corps men were in front of them, an evil grin on their face. Gunshots whizzed in the air. There was screams of pain, and thuds of the fallen. Only 5 of them got out alive. The man who had the gun in his arms, along with the 4 former prisoners of the dreadful Novella Corps. They had their freedom now. The four former prisoners of the Novella Corps were out in the world. They have never known that the world had been altered in such a way, that almost nothing was left.
Chapter1
Chapter 3
Dino was in the lead, her red eyes flashing with a bit of anger. Beckii was following behind, her face seeming to be confused. Hesi had also been following behind Dino, but his face was blank, like he had been in deep thought.
”Dino, why did you leave?” Beckii’s voice was whinny and high, like she was ready to cry. “Why?”
Dino turned around to face Beckii, herself putting on a smile towards her and going to eye-level with the young girl. “They much have been tired, Beckii.” She patted her head and got up, starting to walk to catch up with Hesi who was now about four meters ahead.
Beckii tilted her head for a moment, then turned and followed her. “Oh...” She walked in between Dino and Hesi, looking at one another in the same confused look. “Did I say something wrong?”
Hesi turned to his right, the three of them now walking through the downtown area of the dark, old city. The buildings were high and covered in dust and dirt. They had then entered in an old car parking building with three floors, tons of rusted trucks, vans, and cars parked in the place, some of them old and broken, while others with shattered glass around them. The place had been an old place near a business building for the workers to park their cars.
They had walked to the third floor, climbed over a big barrier with large clubs with lit fire on some spots, and went into their current hide-out. The hide-out had a circle of cars around the three lumpy mattresses filled with old blankets and quilts, along with barrels of fire, surround the outer-edge of the parked cars. There was a few old pipes lying around the beds, supposedly for weapons from the zombies.
”We should go to sleep, too.” Dino looked at Beckii, and then set her on the bed close to the white car that was on the farther edge of the building’s road that had lead up to this room.
Dino had lain on the bed in the middle of the small circle that had been made in the corner of the open room. “Don’t worry; I’ll be switching roles with watch-out with Hesi.”
Beckii nodded, then laid down, staring at the starry sky. The mist had lifted and the moon was clearly visible in the midnight blue sky. Stars twinkled in the sky, shinning brightly. The sky was full of small stars, the only light to be in their dark world. Soon after, Beckii had fallen asleep.
”Hesi, what do you think of Aruk” Dino has asked sometime later after Beckii had fallen asleep. “Should we help them? I mean, a small group of five is no match for, like, 10 000 people.”
Hesi looked to Dino, the fire seeming to dance upon his face. He spoke softly, making sure to not awake Beckii. She needed her sleep after all. “Yea, maybe we should. I know that there are a few survivors in this world.” But not my parents... He thought silently.
When Hesi and Dino had first met all those years ago before this hellhole had started, Hesi and Dino had been best friends. They both had gone to middle school together, but one day, Dino had disappeared.
Hesi had remembered the day so clearly, it made him shudder to recall on it. Like now.
The two of them had been playing in the backyard, close to the back road of Hesi’s house. Hesi, at this time, was called Mark. They had been sitting on the ground, close to the back road and were playing some small game that Hesi couldn’t remember. It had happened to quickly. The dark van pulling up. Hesi too scared to move. Dino screaming for help. No one coming. Him just sitting there, like a dead fish, mouth open. Then the van pulling away and his parents, not noticing what had just happened.
After that, their family had been attacked by the zombies. Hesi had thought they were safe, locking the doors and windows, but they had got in. Hesi had a painful image burned into his memory. His mother screaming in pain as he stood there, like the day that Dino had been kidnapped. Then, his mother falling to the ground, blood on dripping down her face and her eyes wide open along with her mouth. His dad had then tried to kill the zombie with his hands, but had been bit. Hesi got his gun, then shot the zombie’s head, later having to kill his father with the same gun. His sorrow had got the best of him and he had left his city, moving on to another where he had finally met Dino, once again.
Himself finding her after all those years, but Dino not remembering who he was. Hesi had almost left her, but he didn’t. He had saved her, trying to make things right again. Then, they had became friends once more.
Later that day, they had found Beckii, crying over a dead body who had been shaking with the effect of being bit. Hesi had pulled Beckii away from the corpse, killing it with his gun. Beckii had never forgave Hesi for killing him, but Hesi tried to make her understand that he would have been dead either way.
The three of them had now been together for such a long time, now Hesi and Dino had been talking about adding to their small group and having a mission for something.
Hesi had thought about his life. “Well, let’s go over it tomorrow. With Beckii.” Hesi’s eyes gazed at the small child, sleeping peacefully.
Dino nodded to him. “Okay, tomorrow then.”
That night, Dino and Hesi had switched roles for standing guard, both of them not having much sleep. The night had went slowly, both of them sharing what they had remembered and Hesi, trying desperately to help her remember those years that they had shared.
”I guess I give up...” Hesi said after trying for such a long time “You’ll never remember.”
Dino looked at Hesi. “Don’t give up hope. The things you were sharing with me seem so real.”
He looked at her. “Really?”
The moon seemed to light up the scene, their faces now barely visible in the darkness, along with the now low firelight that had been flickering and crackling the whole evening. The stars seemed to twinkle, then vanish in the slightly brighter sky.
Dino nodded. “Yes. I guess so” Dino let out a yawn, stretching herself out to get her energy back. She didn’t feel surprised when her thought turned back to Aruk and his friends.
”Should we wake up Beckii and go to them?” Hesi looked into her eyes, his breath seeming to be the only noise in the silence.
Dino agreed and softly shook Beckii’s shoulder. “Time to get up Beckii.” Her voice was soft as she spoke, like a mother reassuring her child. “We have places to go.”
Beckii let out a small groan, and then sat up, rubbing her eyes. “Eh...?”
Hesi was already up and gathering his rifle and pistols. He had started to walk past the cars and go towards the ramp leading down to the second floor, Dino and Beckii quickly hurrying along.
The sun was just peeking over the low hills in the distance, the mist starting to form. They had been going towards Aruk’s hide-out when they heard a loud, distant roar, seeming to shake the ground. The three of them froze, not wanting to know what kind of monster had made that loud sound.
Chapter 4
Chapter 5
